How Do I Use Vitamin B-12?
Cyanocobalamin is an artificial form of vitamin B12 used to prevent and treat low blood levels of this vitamin. Most people get enough vitamin B12 from their diet. Vitamin B12 is important for maintaining a healthy metabolism, blood cells and nerves. Severe vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to a reduced number of red blood cells (anaemia), stomach/intestinal problems and permanent nerve damage. Vitamin B12 deficiency can occur in certain health conditions (e.g. intestinal/gastric disease, poor nutrition, cancer, HIV infection, pregnancy, old age, alcoholism). It can also occur in people who follow a strict vegetarian (vegan) diet.
The B complex family of essential nutrients and naturally occurring water-soluble vitamins must be combined with intrinsic factors for intestinal absorption. Cyanocobalamin is essential for haematopoiesis, neural metabolism, DNA and RNA production, and carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism. b12 improves iron function in the metabolic cycle and assists in the synthesis of choline from folic acid. b12 metabolism is interrelated with that of folic acid. Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to pernicious anaemia, megaloblastic anaemia and neurological disorders.
